Shopfront glossary
A quick reference to the terms used on shopfront and shutter quotations and drawings.
- Stallriser
- The solid panel below the shop window, between the pavement and the glazing.
- Fascia
- The horizontal band above the shopfront where the business name sits.
- Pilaster
- The vertical column or panel either side of a traditional shopfront.
- Transom
- A horizontal bar dividing glazing, often with a fixed light above a door.
- Mullion
- A vertical bar dividing glazing panels.
- Lath
- One of the interlocking horizontal slats that make up a roller shutter curtain.
- Toughened glass
- Heat-treated safety glass that breaks into small blunt pieces.
- Laminated glass
- Glass bonded to an interlayer so it holds together when broken.
- Critical location
- Areas of glazing near doors and low down where safety glass is legally required.
- Advertisement consent
- Separate permission from the council for most illuminated or large signs.
